It’s true that collaboration can be a challenge. More voices + more ideas = more conflict.
It’s also true that when we work together we can make something much better than we can make alone.
Humans are wired for connection. We thrive when we spend time with like-minded people who understand our perspective, expand our ideas, and validate our feelings.
That doesn’t make connection easy, even if it is vital. Sometimes we get locked into viewing things through our own lens. We can get stuck on our own ideas and we can hurt one another in the process of trying to be heard, seen and valued.
In my experience as a therapist, people I work with often do well with peer support. Being part of a group of folks with a similar lived experience is reassuring. You understand you are not alone as you grapple with whatever challenge you’re all facing. You can learn from one another and lift one another up.
This seems true in my experience with making art, too. My creations are enhanced when I collaborate with others. What we make together is greater than what I can make alone. Feedback helps me find the gaps and appreciate my work from new perspectives. It’s a great way to learn, too.
All this to say that as difficult as it can be to find a balance and get in the groove when working with others, it’s worth it! Groups are GREAT!
